Most free Craigslist selling guides will tell you to stay safe by meeting a buyer at a public place. This is absolutely true.
It is good to meet people in a safe, public environment when you want to sell an item, such as a coffee shop. If you find things to sell on eBay, you just package and ship the item. On Craigslist, you meet them in person to sell it.
Here is what some of those other guides don’t tell you. What do you do if you are selling a large item…
Selling Larger Items
What are you supposed to do if you are selling a bed or a washer and dryer? It is unlikely that you will want to load your washer & dryer onto a truck and drive it to the nearest Starbucks for someone to see.
Selling larger items like this will require a total stranger to enter your home so they can check out the item you are selling..
The best advice I have for these transactions is to have someone else around. It is good to have the presence of another person around while the buyer is in your home viewing the item you are selling.
This person doesn’t have to be involved in the transaction in any way, just make sure the presence is there.
If you live in an apartment building, do not buzz the person into your building. Instead, go down and meet them before letting them into your building.
If you do not feel comfortable letting the person into your home, then don’t.
Women Selling on Craigslist
If you are a female selling an item that requires someone to enter your home, make sure a male presence will be available when you agree on a meeting time with the buyer.
It doesn’t matter who it is. It can be a friend, a family member or a husband or boyfriend, just make sure there is a male presence around while the buyer is there.
Again, most Craigslist users looking to buy items are regular, normal people looking for a great deal, but it doesn’t hurt to stay safe using these steps.
