Don’t Leave Town After Posting on Craigslist

If you are going to post an item for sale on Craigslist, make sure you are available to communicate and meet with a potential buyer. It can be very frustrating for buyers if they can’t contact the person selling an item they want, especially if they are waiting for a return email.

A co-worker of mine recently emailed a seller about a bed frame posted on Craigslist. He emailed the seller on a Friday afternoon. He waited all day for a response and got nothing.

craigslist nerdThe following Tuesday, my co-worker finally got a response from the bed frame seller. The returned email said, “Sorry it took so long. We went out of town for the weekend.”

Really? This person posted an item for sale on Craigslist right before they were going to be leaving town?

You Could Lose a Buyer

Unfortunately for that seller, my co-worker found a different bed frame from a seller that put a phone number in the ad. He called the seller, they met, and he bought the frame with cash.

And unfortunately, that is one of the things that annoys Craigslist users: flaky sellers. Make sure you can be available to meet when a potential buyer contacts you. Don’t post an ad, then travel 200 miles away.

Include a Phone Number

I have said many times before that if you want to sell something on Craigslist, you need to include a phone number. Email is too slow, and if you aren’t checking your emails at least a few times a day for responses to your ad, you will never make a sale. Buyers will look for other sellers if you are too slow to respond.

And if you put a phone number in your ad and you unexpectedly need to leave town and forget to remove your CL ad, at least you can tell the buyer that you needed to leave town for a few days. You can let them know in real time over the phone instead of making them wait a few days for a return email.
